The WHAT UP FUNK BAND has been performing for over 20 years, bringing high-energy funk performances to audiences across the country and locally. This 7-piece ensemble creates music through a careful mix of instrumentation and vocals, drawing on soulful, groove-oriented sounds built from the diverse cultural and musical backgrounds of its members. The band has shared stages with R & B legends like Average White Band, Tower of Power, and Little Anthony and the Imperials, as well as blues innovator James Cotton and pop icons Taylor Dayne and Richard Marx. Their performance history includes main stage slots at national music festivals throughout the northeast, appearances at major casinos and nightclubs in the tri-state area including the SANDS in Atlantic City NJ, MOHEGAN SUN in CT, and LE BAR BAT in NYC, plus performances at various state colleges and universities. The band has also performed for community events and benefits supporting charities including 9/11 relief, M.D.A., and cancer research. In 1998, WHAT UP released their first original album AS FUNKY AS U WANNA B. Following the album's success with their core audience, the band released SOULFUNKFUL in 2006, which brought them national venue bookings, radio play in the U.S. and France, and led to a 2006 live recording titled LIVE FUNK. Audiences have responded well to the band's original material, which is woven throughout their sets alongside covers. The seven musicians bring their individual talents together to deliver performances that emphasize the traditional values of live music while offering a fresh modern sound that can adapt creatively to different situations. People across all age groups respond to the WHAT UP FUNK experience.
